I’ve always been interested in frequent flyer miles and the advantages of each program. Although I have been traveling for a while I haven’t really investigated when and how I can take full advantage of frequent flyer miles.

When I was in my twenties I just looked for the cheapest flight and didn’t care what airline I flew. Now I’m a little more selective on my flights. I don’t always want the budget airline or that 6:00 am flight. So, I decided to sign up for United’s program. It’s totally free and the app is really easy to use!

Our most recent flight to New Orleans was delayed. This was not a good thing for my marriage. My husband was so frustrated and annoyed. I just simply sat there waiting patiently and hoping we’d be able to leave. Then they started asking for volunteers to catch a flight the next morning. I was strongly against this option. I’ve been waiting for my vacation to start and I wanted to be in New Orleans. They offered $500 then $750 then $1200 and finally $1500. Drew was literally jumping out of his seat when it was up to $1200. I still didn’t want to. In my mind I planned everything and I was going to make it happen. I was being stubborn. Needless to say we took the $1500 option and now have $3000 in travel vouchers.

Although not exactly how I wanted to start my trip I can’t say I’m upset to have money to spend on the next one! They also give us meal vouchers and offered a hotel room. Since we live in town we just went home and had another nights sleep in our own bed.

Alright down to the frequent flyer miles and perks! We bought the in-flight Wi-Fi, but then it didn’t allow us to stream. That was incredibly frustrating. The only saving grace was I paid for it on my Amex and I get up to $200 travel credits on the airline of my choice. Which is United. I’m trying to stack my deals and perks as much as possible. This morning I got awarded a segment of a trip and the 540 miles for our flight. Not bad considering the $3000 in travel vouchers. So, I’d say it was a success!!

I still have some outstanding questions about frequent flyer programs:

1. How do I get my husband miles? Can you add another person on the same account? Or do I need to create and entirely new account just for him?

2. How can I get the coveted seat upgrade? I’m sure this has to do with status and your overall account.

3. How do I use my miles once I’ve earned them?

So, as you can see I’m not an expert in this area at all! But I’m going to find out all I can about United and other airline perks! More to come!!
